Hey guys. The other day, I came across a site that some of you may really like.

http://www.librevox.org

The goal of the site is to record all books in the public domain. Everything is recorded by volunteers and the books can be freely downloaded in mp3 format or streamed. No registration is necessary. This is a nice change for those who want to get their hands on audio material to listen to on a trip or who just want to get away from braille or synthetically-read books for a bit. I've also posted about this site to a few places with the hope that some of my friends will upload themselves reading from their favourite books. In any case, if, like me, you don't care if what you read is on the current best seller list or is what everyone is talking about, then check out this site. The books go up to the year 1923. That said, they didn't say anything about reading more recent works if the author has given permission to do so or if he/she specifically stated that the work is freely available and may be distributed etc. So we may see some more modern works on there at some point. Well, happy listening.

I'm sorry guys. That should read

http://www.librivox.org

I've also just heard of another autio book site at

http://www.storynory.com

This one has mostly children's stories on it that are read by one individual. But they're really interesting and she's a wonderful reader. For those familiar with it, she has that amazing received pronunciation accent that, sadly, isn't really heard much these days.

Hey. Can someone submit their own books once they're copyrighted and all?

I'm not sure. They probably could if they weren't copyrighted. But once they are, they're no longer in the public domain. That said, since we're dealing with the actual author wanting to read them, I'm willing to bet they'd allow it.

Yeah, because people would have to get my permission to use them and things....I'm looking at self-publishing, you see, so I wasn't sure what their qules were on submitting your own published books and yadda yadda yadda.

Hmm... sounds interesting. Will check out the site. Although, I'm not really into reading stuff that's not current but I'll give it a try anyways, just to please you and myself. LOL.

I could never understand the idea of only reading what's current. There are so many great books out there from today, the recent past and the distant past. So much to explore.

You can also get the books on your computer automatically when you download the Web IE program with one of the extra programs it comes with; that's how I found out about the LibriVox thing. Thanks for the address though so I can go thru and download just the books I want from there. *smile* I'm checking the site out right now.
